First of all, let me ask you a question.
What could be the most important factors of a speech (prepared or impromptu), that plays the leading role in creating a massive impact?
I asked that question myself and finally arrived at three factors: the words, the tonality, and the body language.
The words fill up the ‘content’ of a speech, while tonality and body language cater to the ‘context”.
Unfortunately, our focus is more on getting the ‘content’ right, than getting the ‘context’ right. We are pretty busy in gathering information, writing with perfection and ruthlessly editing our next “Monday Morning Speech” to get it sounds ‘perfect’.
At a certain period in history, I too was doing the same. The result? Well, there’s good news and bad news.
The good news is that I came up with an excellent masterpiece of work. Since it was crafted by me word-by-word, couple of readings got it inculcated into my head.
Then the bad news? The delivery was ‘terrible’! I was way too nervous. No gestures, only that I was the jester behind the podium!
The knock was hard and big, so as the lesson that came packaged with it.
Poor context makes outstanding content ‘standing out’ of mind!
According to researchers, words make just 7% of the impact while tonality (38%) and body language (55%) make up the rest of 93%.
The content is what you say. The context is how you say.
Spend most of your preparation time to work on the context. A well-planned context can breathe life into even a “not-that-perfect” content.
But, unfortunately, it never works the other way! 😀
So, let’s ask ourselves the most poignant question.
How can we get our context better?
